Breakfast ideas for busy, breastfeeding moms.
Our go-to, nourishing and real-food breakfast ideas that are quick easy to have on hand.
If you’ve been following along for a bit, you know that nourishment during motherhood isn’t something I mess around with. It’s incredibly important to me. Before my son was born, one of my primary focuses was preparing nourishing freezer meals and postpartum snacks that would support healing and recovery.
Once those meals started running out and we started settling into our new rhythm and routines, I found myself looking for healthy breakfast ideas that were realistic for life with a baby. I wanted easy healthy breakfast options made with real, nourishing ingredients. I needed healthy breakfast food that would support energy, stable blood sugar, and milk supply.
As a busy mom (and a breastfeeding mom), I quickly realized that having a handful of quick breakfast ideas and doing a little healthy breakfast meal prep made all the difference. Over time, I found a rhythm of healthy breakfast recipes and simple breakfast ideas for breastfeeding moms that were nourishing, realistic, and supportive for this season of motherhood.
If you’re looking for easy healthy breakfast ideas made with real food, especially during postpartum or while breastfeeding, these are some of the breakfasts I come back to again and again.
Why a Nourishing Breakfast Matters (Especially when Breastfeeding)
As a breastfeeding mom, your body is doing an incredible amount of work. Milk production requires hundreds of additional calories per day. Many people recommend adding an additional 300-500 calories per day, but honestly, many moms actually need a lot more than this to keep up milk supply and stable energy levels.
But even beyond breastfeeding, breakfast is still one of the most important parts of the day.
Starting the morning with a well-balanced breakfast can help:
support stable energy
prevent blood sugar crashes
reduce mid-day cravings
support overall hormone balance
improve mood and focus
A well-balanced breakfast should include high-quality protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates.
Nourishing Quick Breakfast for Busy Moms
While I love a slow morning, I know that isn’t always possible. Sometimes I need a quick, 5-minute option that still fuels me.
Some of my go-to quick breakfasts include:
Sourdough toast with eggs and avocado
Full-fat yogurt with honey, berries, and homemade granola (I also like to mix in collagen for an extra protein boost)
Cottage cheese with fruit and ceylon cinnamon
A smoothie with high-quality protein, frozen fruit, and milk of choice
Leftovers from dinner the night before (honestly, a very underrated breakfast idea)
Healthy Breakfast Meal Prep Ideas
One of my best hacks for a successful morning is meal prepping breakfast ahead of time. On the days my husband and I both have to be to work, nothing saves us more than having breakfast already made.
These are some of my favorite make-ahead breakfasts:
Egg muffins (like Starbucks egg bites, but much better for you): we always include eggs, veggies, sausage, cheese… you can be creative!
Baked oatmeal squares
Breakfast casserole
Chia pudding
Breakfast burritos or sandwiches: we love making our own sourdough English muffins or tortillas
High Protein Breakfast Ideas
Protein is extremely important, especially when breastfeeding. I always aim to get at least 30 grams of protein with every meal, but I’m especially particular about this during breakfast. It not only helps to boost your milk supply, but it’s incredibly important for stabilizing blood sugar levels throughout the day.
Nourishing high-protein ideas:
Eggs scrambled with cottage cheese, veggies, and sourdough toast
Breakfast sausage and roasted potates
Greek yogurt with honey
Baked protein pancakes: 2 eggs, ½ cup of cottage cheese, ¼ cup oats, a pinch of baking soda, vanilla, and toppings of choice and blend together. One of my absolute favorite meals to make ahead!
Smoked salmon with toast or a bagel
Grab-and-Go Breakfast
One thing we always try to make a point to do is have family breakfast around the table. While this is an important value for us, the reality is that’s not always possible.
For those days, these are great options:
Overnight oats
Yogurt parfaits
Hard boiled eggs and fruit
Protein muffins
Grab-and-go breakfast sausages: we love the Amylu organic chicken maple sausages!
Having ingredients on hand for a nourishing breakfast sets our family up for success. It’s made my life as a new mom so much easier, and I hope you’ll find these ideas helpful for you as well!
